Story Club is all about –
- having fun with words and pictures
- meeting and sharing ideas with other young story-makers, and
- writing – or drawing – them however you want!
Whether that be as stories or poems, non-fiction narratives or songs, or even comic strips.
It is NOT about –
- practicing spelling or handwriting
- learning grammar and punctuation rules
- teaching you to write like they do at school.
In Story Club, we will –
- Play games and other activities to create ideas
- Write/draw the things we want to, in the way we want to do them!
- Share what we’ve created with each other.
Sometimes we’ll use the objects in the museum for inspiration, sometimes we won’t. And what we create from that inspiration will be up to us!*
*Within reason: note that activities will take place in the Museum’s education room and outcomes will be paper based.

| Information for parents/carers: According to the National Literary Trust, less than half of children and young people in the UK enjoy writing for fun and less than one in five write regularly in their free time. And yet, those who do are twice as likely to write above the expected levels for their age as those who don’t. Research shows that writing can be a great way to – – practice and expand on creativity – express ideas and imagination, thoughts and feelings – build confidence and personal resilience – develop mental wellbeing, and – communicate and connect with others. In fact, young people who write creatively outside school are twice as likely to write above their expected age-group level as those who don’t.[1] Charnwood Young Story Club is a dedicated creative space for young writers to practice their creativity and build confidence through sharing their work with others. Sessions are led by myself, an experienced writing teacher, book coach and published author. I write fiction and non-fiction, poetry and heritage texts, and have over ten years’ experience helping people in the community of all ages and skill levels find the confidence to write the stories they want to tell. |
