The Story of King Richard III

In November 2019 I worked with the pupils of Dixie Grammar School in Market Bosworth on a project to draw and write about King Richard III, to raise awareness of a unique scultpture trail being planned for the area and tell the story of the Battle of Bosworth in such a way as could be displayed at a special exhibition at Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre.

I led workshops with age-groups right across the school and was impressed with how much the children already knew about Richard of York – not surprising, really, given that the school stands just miles from the battlefield where he died.

There were lots of lovely moments over the course of my visits, but by far my favourite were the game of ‘musical crowns’ we played at the end of each session – and the excitement of every ‘winning king’ when given their ‘booty’ – a bag of gold (chocolate) coins!

The children showed lots of creativity and together, we created an anthology, posters and a film documenting Richard’s story. You can watch the film here.
